The railway network in Japan with a total length of about 28,000km is built in the four main islands, with mountain ridges running through each of the four islands. Tracks run along coast lines and passing mountain ridges with many bridges and tunnels. The scenery seen from a train window is, therefore, full of variety and fascinates many people.
Railway traveling is established as a field of activities, known as "Nori-tetsu", among railway fans in addition to traditional photographing ("Tori-tetsu") or model railroading ("Mokei-Tetsu"). Train timetables are monthly published by two publishers with a circulation of two million copies in total. They are not only used by people actually traveling by rail, but also by enthusiasts who are interested in reading the timetable.
This page is going to provide information on railway traveling in Japan.
